There’s only one ambition in life. Win.

The ones who say less from this are losers. They are not by any means wrong, less human or less accepted as social parts of a heterogeneous society. They are simply not winners.

I am a winner. I always want to win. I am competitive. I choose my wins. I accept defeat only to learn how to win. I know how it tastes.

How

  1. You need to be in control of your area of expertise in order to rationalize your weaknesses and strengths, before entering your battles and prevent them to even happen at all.
  2. Minimizing your losses will never make you win with grandiosity.
  3. Step outside yourself and observe the horizon above others in the edge of the cliff.
  4. Take defeat for granted and advance systematically to victory.
  5. The first image in the mind of others is not what you have achieved but the way you look and present yourself to the world.
  6. Achieve success in the success of your projects and don’t focus on happiness.
  7. Know yourself before knowing others because you will have to play them both.
  8. Learn something new everyday.
  9. Age doesn’t give you maturity or experience.
  10. Predict others in the scenarios that are only favorable to you.
  11. Arrogantly tell others what you see if you’re sure about your opinion and have weighted collateral damages.
  12. With your choices comes consequences and that’s why its your responsibility to control every surrounding you may find yourself in.
  13. Loose the biggest amount of time with the solution and not with the problem.
  14. Control your temper and keep others in a deductive focus from deep inside of you.
  15. Lying is not an option about protection but a dangerous tactic of attack.
  16. Logic is a great weapon of self destruction when alone in the room of creativity.
  17. Rules are made to be broken when followed scrupulously and can surprise others with evolution and adjustment.
  18. Observe people interact with life while mirroring their thoughts in your mind.
  19. Entertain yourself in your private, intimate and reserved life with whatever suits you best.

#depth #design and the #interpolation of the old #bidimensional #designer

Design as a mean to effectively communicate, should be a linear process of cumulative conceptual integration.

From the initial ideas to the deepest formal expressions in more or less fashionable graphical elements and certainly, given the author, design should evolve the existing procedural elements and trends while still following the basic principles of generic graphic communication, in order to be effective. A cumulative linear process starting with the briefing, ranging from the decisive idea, initial trial and structure, advancing vigorously to the proven concept and technical rational development, thus providing the means to materialise the desired execution.

This approach, my approach towards the profession, makes me think if we are indeed near a re evolution and critic by innovating the way we arrive at a final solution or simply delaying the advances in traditional print and digital media in order to become obsolete later in time. This also troubles me because the constraints of the designer are not formal or conceptual, they are technical! Designers don’t accept being technicians of broad communication by formation.

They reject it only to become failed artists of shape and color. We all know that a common designer lives in a chaotic search for answers, in the troubled deadlines, irreal clients and briefing requirements. A true problem solver, but with deadlines in mind. He needs help. So when will come the messias? The rational, calm, prolific and integrationist methodist adventist designer that will provide a new age in design.

 

This features are not in the designers DNA and above all they are not taught as a prerequisite in his formation. Sure there some who follow some rules, regulations, procedures and methodical approaches, but they are rarer than Krypton, and only follow their own rules. They are bonded to the flat thinking critic that structures their minds since the early formatting of the first work experiences. Designers are flat and should watch the way media is constructively evolving.

So, why graphical media is trying to leave it’s bidimensional structure for such a long time and never assumes a direct composite approach of full subject immersion in the process? And I’m not trying to confuse digital 3D immersion media with some graphical elements that are already in use. Because i am saying loud and clear to designers to get to know better your geometry bases and use perspective in the way it represents accurately some given formal concept or principle such as: depth.

This is the distance from the top or surface of something to its bottom.

The distance from the nearest to the farthest point of something or from the front to the back. It’s used to specify the distance below the top or surface of something to which someone or something percolates or at which something happens. Is the apparent existence of three dimensions in a picture, photograph, or other two-dimensional representation; perspective.

Providing:

  • complexity and profundity of thought. synonyms: profundity, deepness, wisdom, understanding, intelligence, sagacity, discernment, penetration, insight, astuteness, acumen, shrewdness;
  • complexity, intricacy;
  • extensive and detailed study or knowledge.
  • intensity of emotion, usually considered as a laudable quality.
  • intensity of color.
  • a point far below the surface.

Design needs to leave the comfort zone defined by flat bidimensional thinking. Designers need to embrace the world as we sense it. Complete and utterly material. Interpolating the codes needed to decypher communication in a real and evolved reality, approaching, at the verge of the re evolution.

Como somos, seremos e orgulhosamente ostentamos as vicissitudes de um povo feliz, desde o vigor da decadência ao ócio da fartura num ciclo antropológico eterno.

E tudo começa na demagogia. A mesma que se apregoa farta de saber que a revolução fez, faz e fará aniversários? O povo é sereno e sabe que a história está bem contada. Por isso se aceita como é. Porque havemos nós, iluminados visionários contrariar o que a maioria defecta?

Como aceito não ser esse o meu papel, aponto o dedo a quem o faz, e desafio-o a calmamente explicar isso á sua mãe, pai e outros sem por um momento se sentir frágil na defesa de um argumento que poderá ser visto como snob, elitista e acima de tudo demagogo. Depois admiram-se de dizerem que há alguns que têm a mania…

É nestas cultas linhas que revejo um arcaismo de profissão que inocente se passa viral entre gentes e cada vez menos brandos costumes. É nestas artes, as que têm palavra no território que vemos o progresso. É neste território que o romantismo se mantém num tandem de vontades entre quem pode e quem se resigna.

Acordem. Se trabalham neste território, não procurem o cliente, o projeto certo, o munícipio que financia o estapafúrdio no medo de nunca realizar o sonho de criar uma marca indelével e que figura nos livros que só parvos leêm enquanto invejam.

Tenham coragem e ajudem quem precisa a ter mais e melhor por menos e maior.

“Criado originalmente para o jornal Homeland – News from Portugal – representação portuguesa na 14ª Exposição Internacional de Arquitectura – La Biennale di Venezia 2014”.

Entre o exótico e o periférico, Portugal permanece (até para os portugueses) uma coise indecifrável. O passado mítico e o futuro opaco colidem num presente de crise e banalidades – fados trágicos, agora que a crise veio outra vez cobrar às gentes desta terra condenadas a oscilar entre o fausto e a decadência sem nunca se ter achado a medida justa entre as duas. Já nos aconteceu mais vezes ter perdido o fio da narrativa; começar coisas sem as acabar.

Na introdução da obra de referência de François Lyotard, “La condition postmoderne”, 1979, o autor afirma que a pós-modernidade é sobretudo uma atitude de desconfiança face às grandes narrativasda modernidade. Não se trata, por isso, de instituir o final de uma era e o começo de outra; trata-se antes de uma re-escrita de alguns traços reivindicados pela modernidade. A hipermodernidade(Baudrillard), a sobremodernidade (Marc Augé) ou a modernidade tardia (G.Vattimo), constituem outras tantas designações sobre as ilusões das certezas do conhecimento – conhecer para prever, como defendia Auguste Comte -, da racionalidade, da tecno-ciência, do Estado, da democracia e do capitalismo como garantia de continuidade e eficácia do progresso do progresso.

Afirmar que Portugal é pós-moderno sem ter sido moderno, equivale a três afirmações simultâneas:

  1. o carácter incipiente, descontínuo e tardio da modernização numa sociedade e num território marcados pelas assimetrias e pela hegemonia de Lisboa;
  2. a conservação de características pré-modernas;
  3. a colisão destas duas características num país a braços com a sua inscrição múltipla no quadro da União Europeia e da globalização num cenário de persistência da crise económica e do aprofundamento das desigualdades sociais e territoriais.

É Boaventura Sousa Santos um dos autores que melhor explica esta condição híbrida da portugalidade, o seu profundo exotismo como resultado de um processo de desenvolvimento semi-periférico -“… durante muitos séculos, Portugal foi simultaneamente o centro de um grande império colonial e a periferia da Europa (…) foi o único país colonizador a ser considerado por outros países colonizadores como país nativo ou selvagem ”. [1]

É esta a terra incognita que, falhada a modernização – à maneira iluminista do séc. XVIII; em forma de industrialismo no séc XIX; nos anos cinzentos da ditadura do Estado Novo, 1933-74; e durante a intensidade modernizadora do período pós adesão à União Europeia, sobretudo durante a década de 90 -, nos aparece agora com todos os seus mistérios, incompreensões e seduções. Entretanto, os portugueses emigram (as usual).

Antes, eram os tipicismos regionais longamente romanceados e ilustrados pelas suas paisagens, que forneciam um doce e tóxico veneno para ilustrar a invencível alma lusitana e os seus heróis. Invariavelmente posicionado num passado mitificado, Portugal vivia a sua fantasia nostálgica como fuga à realidade.

Agora, sem o xarope se ter esgotado, as paisagens desconstroem-se e atropelam-se nas suas próprias mitologias. Um desassossego. Se a paisagem e as suas narrativas e representações são constitutivos poderosos da identidade, que identidade se construirá então que não seja a própria sensação de estilhaçamento e de perda de identidade?

Ao cosmopolitismo moderno que tudo nivelava pela razão universal, contrapõem-se agora a modernidade radical, sem os travões que ainda há pouco tinha: o Estado cede perante “os mercados”, instância de regulação social de tudo; a ciência, cada vez mais universal, navega ao sabor dos seus sucessos tecnológicos conseguidos com dinheiro das macro-empresas globais; o indivíduo dispersa-se nas suas múltiplas referenciações e pertenças quase tribais; a democracia desfeita em éter irá para a internet… . Vivemos num presente permanente, numa cultura-mundo[2] que tudo processa entre massificações globais e localismos neo-tradicionais.

A geografia deste ataque de nervos desenrola-se entre formas espontâneas de urbanização como a Rua da Estrada, e o total abandono dos territórios deixados por processos recentes e radicais de desruralização. Com a perda do mundo rural tradicional – da agricultura familiar de autosubsistência e seus tradicionalismos -, perderam-se os jardineiros da paisagem e abriu-se uma crise de sentido e de enchimento mitológico dos campos e da vida no campo.[3] Pontualmente, na geografia diversa do país, do Vinho do Porto ao azeite ou ao leite, a nova agricultura hipermoderna e global produz paisagens tecnológicas em tudo distintas da paz que havia nos campos. Pelo meio ficam todas as combinações possíveis que nem cabem na mediatização da cidade e do urbano enquanto centro Histórico, nem no campo enquanto Aldeia Típica.

A urbanização extensiva assume formas e dimensões geográficas extremamente variadas a caminho de uma quase indiferença locativa, tanta quanta a extensão territorial dos sistemas sócio-técnicos que possibilitam a urbanização – as próteses infraestruturais que suportam a mobilidade de pessoas, bens, informação, energia, água, esgoto,… Radicalmente moderno, dir-se-ia, sem as complicações modernistas dos zonamentos e outras ilusões de ordem. As arquitecturas são as mais variadas, de múltiplo feitio e procedência transgénica. O projectista e o bricoleur podem finalmente conviver sem a desconfiança dos selvagens ou dos virtuosos.

Os habitantes deste espaço são os portugueses cada vez mais espalhados pelo mundo e, ocasionalmente, em sua terra de origem. Há 40 anos viviam em ditadura e tinham um império. Em 1974 houve uma revolução, desfez-se o império, instaurou-se a democracia e a modernização veio a galope; em pouco mais de trinta anos o país mudou mais do que em toda a sua história; agora estamos em crise numa Europa esfumaçada – pós-modernos sem ter sido modernos; europeus e periféricos; nómadas na era da globalização.

Evolution, knowledge and self awareness as an #interpolation of #studium reality over consciousness.

The primal birth of our collective mind, adjusting the fittest to survive in a constant cycle of discovery based on human interactions. The entity of the individual overcoming everything in its path to become the master of the ensemble. The connections are only dependent of the concepts available to become more than ideas in the general acceptance of our society. This is the normal procedure that enhances innovation to the limits of possibility and surpases common denominators with the ambition of more.

A language of discovery and status, identifying the defiance of the established. Searching incessantly for the answer that needs a new code to be written. This is #studium: an eternal search for the unknown, deep in the reality that foresees rarity.

The destruction, by construction, of the dogmatic prejudices of reality exist only there to become obsoletes.

The approach is …

Can the act of creation be a group of systematic contexts united in some given (conceptual and technical) basic principles that provide a logical answer to a problem? YES. This question raises the doubt about the difference between an idea and a concept, method, process and what is a PROJECT (in the creative field).

My definitions are the following:

  • idea . mental concept or representation of an abstract reality.
  • concept . experienced reality provided by existing content (inherent or achieved by research and formation) defining a concrete conceptual or technical reality.
  • method . group of techniques used to acquire knowledge (from the act of correction or achievement) by innovation.
  • process . systematization of basic given principles of a concept in a group of decisions, selected as ideals for a formulated problem.
  • project . materialization of a new innovative reality by the group of human resources in a defined and finite stages of development.

The idea can only be materialized in a concept if you follow a method of systematizing contexts in a defined process towards a final decision that leads to a finite number of results, summed in a project.

Be a Part of Something

I´m deeply interested in the process of a project as a continuous loop of forward/backward thinking, decisions and solutions for several intermediate problems. The systematization of that process determines the success and strength of the end solution. The one that most of the times is neglected to the end result, and should always be linked to the whole content, and not to the isolated end part (usually the materialization of the idea).

These parts of a given process can be identified in two different areas:

  1. the people (human resources needed to develop the specific action identified as a perquisite by the project) as the true value of the development.
  2. the stages (the forward loops, as the systematic contexts needed to formulate a decision towards the end of the continuous process) as the network and connections between the people, the problem and the solution.

In everyday work, and just like in a R&D project, the commissioned work for a client has to follow the same principles, stages and resource allocation needed to develop the process, and systematically create a profusion of micro decisions/solutions that provide a final answer to the problem. Undoubtedly, this creed for creatives is an obligation. If you follow this path you will be a valued worker, a truly dependable partner in development of a concept. You will fill in the method definition markers with no problem. You will be PART of something, as a resource.

What about ideas, concepts, processes and projects. Can you be the whole? NO.

I AM THE WHOLE. Take me as an example and follow what i say and write. Follow the written rules scrupulously and maybe you will advance to the next stage. The one where i follow the rules you write. The one where i follow YOU.

Be the action.

Some creatives act as they don’t follow a line of thinking, as if they are inspired by divine enlightenment. What they hide is a native ability to process information, micro decisions and loop thinking inside them. They are native process makers.

Others, seem to be astonished with that abilities and envy that same ability to provide end results. They can achieve similar results if they propose to follow the method inherent to the process chosen for a defined concept that native processors follow naturally. But…

Is this the answer to balance things between creatives? NO.

There’s a difference between talent and hard work. We can follow every defined rule by the book, be systematic about every idea, concept and context, apply all we have learned throughout the years, read every book in every library around the world and never achieve what a native processor, with proved inner talent, achieves. These are the ones, who with their natural ability to systematize contexts, can take them to the stage of innovation and critical content creation. So…

Can you produce talent? NO. Can you be a part of talent? YES.

Give all you have to the method and try to reach to the part of process creation. Then you will be able to, maybe, turn an idea in a concept and follow trough the innovation. Keep doing, keep trying, keep overshooting, keep failing but keep being active. Be the ACTiON. Always a better choice than being reaction.

But you can’t, can you?

It’s time to talk about time.

It’s time to earn time some time. From our work to give back to our life. From our life to give back to our work. It’s time to cut all the excess fat we gained over the years by procrastinating our professional future with disappointment and lighten up our mind with the perspective of dedication and the notion of a career. This is what i want from all of us.

The secrete of simplicity is living with the essential.

I use that expression very often but lately i asked myself to many times what does that mean. Do we want to live simple or plain, and I identify in these words different concepts. They have adjacent an idea – opposite to the common knowledge – the one that defines life as a complex motion of events and people interlaced one another in a spiral of time and infinite variants – that life is complex. They are only (and meaningfully) representing the way we position ourselves towards the complexity of things. Things are complex but we can simply embrace them and do our best to overcome and succeed. Or be reluctant about leaving plain attitudes and procrastination behind – i believe this is true for the majority of cases of people who keeps life plainly in sight.

These perspectives gives us different amounts of time.

If we try out simplicity, we will be forced to cut away everything to become more thin, agile and most of all become better in what we do. For that purposes we will have to initially invest a great amount of time, cutting, trimming, perfecting ourselves, our specialties and goals to become a strong candidate to success. After that process we will gain tons of time to spare, making us the way we intend to be. For sure, we will be recognized for that enhancements. With that method behind, liberating time, we will create a figure of a strong independent, organized and trustworthy individual. People will rely on us and we will deliver, personally and professionally because we will have time to others, because we have time for ourselves.

In plain mode, we can fully cope with things. We are able to deal with daily focus, goals, needs and ensure an agenda for our lives. We can plainly deliver and we are able to find free time to ourselves with the justification of constant execution. That’s with no assumed compromise to constant innovation and pushing boundaries forward. It’s a fantastic way to keep a good, healthy and stress free life. The way we deal with ambition is a big part of that position because it’s simply absent of the equation. By no means i am criticizing negatively this way to see life or work, i am merely saying its a way to see it.
It’s time to be the chosen one.

I want professional humans who see life simply. I want inspired people who know that time is precious and needs honest investment in order to free themselves of the complex constraints of life and work. People who are ambitious and keep pushing boundaries. That keep throwing time in the air knowing they will catch up later. A better, successful and recognizable latter with the notion of a better, successful and recognizable human. I want to take time to do things technically and perfectly, critically and with innovative, unique creative content. With time to spare.

If we define a line, even if marked with a pencil and not a pen, we can follow that direction scrupulously and congratulate ourselves with success. We just need to trace the line. Simply trace the line.

Let’s win something. Let’s win time.

What i WANT and what i DO defines who i AM.

Do you know who you are?

Witch kind of professional profile do you think better fits your description? Do you even have an answer for these questions? If you don’t, you better find them and this is an ultimatum, a final call to your professional counciouness. The ones that surround you have to know who you are. YOU, have to know who you are without a shadow of a doubt and most of all I HAVE TO KNOW who you are! A search is needed. A profound and truly enlightened search about your role in my professional life. And it’s better to be a defying one. For you and for me. We need a role in life. Ours is a big one, just because creatives were born to turn this world in a better place and that exactly and critically is what WE WILL DO.

Have you chosen the menu?

I chose to be the kind of person that orders different in a restaurant and is dazzled by the way the chef answers that call. I chose to start my meal with dedication and inspiration, followed by a soup of technical priorities. For first dish i like to choose a mix of freshness of the sea served with contemplation of critical content. After and for a worthy pause i ask for an amuse bouche. It brings the zing to the meal, the smile in your face and the need to keep the food coming to the table. The main dish is objectively the dedication and support to the idea, that transforms it into a concept. It’s a strong, full and tasteful flavor that endures in your mouth and in your mind. The wine is not forgotten. It is meticulously chosen to be the only choice. Finally the desert is only served when you see the end of the project and it keeps being sweet after all this years. Don’t let life choose WHO you are.

I chose to be unique. I chose to be followed and not a follower and that is what moves me everyday. Choose your role carefully but make a choice, always. No matter what, stick to that and give the others the full notion of WHO you are. Choose wisely and choose, but choose. Don’t wait, choose now. In the early days of my professional adulthood i had to face life and in front of me i had a choice about the future. It was a life defying and cruel choice to make. I had to choose the steepest part of the mountain to climb. I chose the longest route to a stress free life. I chose the risky and rocky road. I chose the biggest pay slot machine of them all, the one with the jackpot lights turned on.

Be a PART of something. Be valuable but don’t be irreplaceable.

Make the others think they can’t have you for a long time because they simple cannot keep up with your talent. Be the best. Don’t be plain.
